Monza, Italy Circuit Guide
Monza is the home of the famous 'Tifosi' or 'Fans' making this a fantastic place to watch an F1 race and it is a circuit that inspires many that love Motorsport. With a big history in the sport, beautiful location, extremely fast layout and stunningly named corners, Monza is an essential part of F1.
monza f1 track
Monza has been on the F1 World Championship calendar for every year but 1 since it's creation in 1950, having first opened in 1922. Famed for the atmosphere, almost as much as the racing, Monza has cemented itself in the hearts of the Motorsport loving Italians. It is the loudest and fastest track of the year, located only a few miles from the home of Ferrari.
After every GP at Monza the fans swarm the grid to watch the podium presentations. It is easy to keep the passion alive as this is a short race, lasting only around 1:20. Schumacher holds the fastest average race speed after his 153.8mph in 2003 overtook the previous time set in 1971.
Monza's old banked track was last used in 1961 due to the tragic death of a driver and 15 spectators made it clear safety changes were needed.
challenging & high speed circuit
Not always a spectators favourite due to long straights and fast corners that do not always offer up the best spectacle, it is rarely considered to be bad by the drivers themselves. Out on track cars are able to hit their limiter and the majority of the lap is completed at full throttle. The first corner chicane causes no end of controversy, with the slightest mistake under braking making it almost impossible to get through. Huge kerbs are strategically placed to punish those errors.
Long flowing corners lead through to the next chicane which can often provide an overtake opportunity, although the feeling of the track tightening may put you off a move here. The wonderfully named Ascari is a world famous corner and one that is a joy to drive through and sling shots you towards the just as famous parabolica as the last corner.
Enjoy the straights to plot your next move and gradually increase your cornering speeds and decrease your braking distances to bring those lap times down bit by bit.
