Sochi, Russia Circuit Guide
A circuit and location that many thought odd, Sochi threw up a real surprise in 2014 with a genuinely successful race. 2015 saw Lewis Hamilton spray Putin with his winners Champagne and the rest is history.
Sochi f1 track guide
A circuit design that is almost identical to the F1 flop of Valencia Street Circuit, many thought it was destined for failure, only for it to receive a glowing report card in 2014. Designed once more by Hermann Tilke (the only circuit designer in the world?)
It's 'bowling green' smooth surface lead to virtually no tyre wear and Hamilton capitalised to take the first ever win before repeating his feat 12 months on.
The track runs clockwise with a modest 16 corners.
challenging & high speed circuit
A long circuit means that only Silverstone and Spa cover more miles, whist Sochi lays down its roots as a street circuit in the winter Olympics park from earlier in 2014.
Turn 1 can be taken flat out in the dry, although at race start this is unlikely unless you are away with the front runners or have been left napping on the grid. This is followed up by a long straight, so bottling out of going flat out could cost you dear,
Turn 4 is an exceptionally long left hander that will test your ability to carry speed and hold track position for your exit, it may even be the longest corner on the calendar. Although featuring many right hand corners, most are medium to high speed with enough width to really carry your speed with a good entry.
Keep your eye out for the fast double apex coming up towards the end of the lap, which provides a real sense of achievement when successfully navigated at speed.
